  • BENEFITS PROVIDED TO A MOTHER OR FATHER DURING PREGNANCY AND AFTER THE BIRTH TO CARE FOR THE CHILD. THEY INCLUDE PAID OR UNPAID LEAVE AND LUMP SUM PAYMENTS OF A MATERNITY OR CHILDBIRTH ALLOWANCE. THE BENEFITS VARY BETWEEN COUNTRIES WITH RESPECT TO THE AMOUNT OF LEAVE AND PAY/BENEFIT ENTITLEMENT, WHETHER ONLY ONE OR BOTH PARENTS HAVE ENTITLEMENT, AND WHETHER OR NOT THE BENEFITS ARE RESTRICTED TO EMPLOYEES. PARENTAL BENEFITS CAN ALSO APPLY TO ADOPTIVE PARENTS.
