WITNESS PROTECTION
Definition
- PROTECTION OF A THREATENED WITNESS (OR ANY PERSON INVOLVED IN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM) BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER A TRIAL. PROTECTION IS USUALLY PROVIDED BY POLICE, THOUGH NOT ALL COUNTRIES HAVE FORMAL WITNESS PROTECTION SCHEMES. PROTECTION MAY ONLY BE REQUIRED UNTIL THE CONCLUSION OF A TRIAL, OR IT MAY BE LIFELONG, WITH PHYSICAL RELOCATION AND THE CREATION OF A NEW IDENTITY.
