Definition

  • THE EMPIRE CONSISTING OF GREAT BRITAIN AND THE OTHER BRITISH POSSESSIONS, DOMINIONS, AND DEPENDENCIES. THE EMPIRE WAS AT ITS HEIGHT DURING THE REIGN OF QUEEN VICTORIA (1837-1901), BUT IT WAS UNABLE TO SURVIVE THE GLOBAL POLITICAL AND SOCIAL CHANGES OF THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY AND ANY RESIDUAL COLONIAL POWER HELD BY BRITAIN WAS DISMANTLED IN THE DECADES FOLLOWING THE END OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR (1939-45).
